The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
